Chef Timothy Cipriano is Executive Director of Food Services for the New Haven, CT Public Schools. One of Tim’s most valuable achievements to date has been introducing more local produce into the school lunch program (Over 150,000 pounds of CT Grown in 2010!) and working to educate New Haven’s urban students about fresh, healthy and great tasting food choices. NHPS has 46 schools with roughly 20,000 students with a free and reduced percentage of 80%.

“Systematic change is needed in this country to control childhood obesity and to educate our children on proper nutrition and choosing REAL foods. With the support of the Obama Administration, Share Our Strength, School Nutrition Association and many other local and national organizations this change has begun. Chefs are rock stars; children look up to us,” says Cipriano. “When I walk into one of my schools in my chef jacket the eyes of the children light up and I am asked if I am on Food TV, or Iron Chef. The children are interested to what I have to say, it is very easy to engage children with food, real food from local farms. Children want to learn and Chefs Move to Schools is the program to see through with the necessary change. I am very happy to be working so close with the White House to help make these changes.”

Chef Tim, as he is commonly referred to, began this position with New Haven School Food in July 2008 and immediately started building collaborative partnerships around school food with local organizations such as Yale University, CT Food Bank, CitySeed Farmer’s Markets and Lockwood Farm in nearby Hamden, Connecticut. One of Tim’s most valuable achievements to date has been introducing more fresh, local produce into the school lunch program and working to educate New Haven’s urban students about fresh, healthy and great tasting food choices. Chef Tim has over 20 years of culinary experience having worked in school food service for the last 6 years and at several restaurants in the Northeast.

 

New Haven School Food has been featured in numerous local and national publications including the New York Times and Chef Tim has also been a repeat guest on National Public Radio and local and national news programs talking about his successful food service program incorporating real food into the school meal program. Chef Tim, New Haven School Food and The Sound School were profiled on an episode of My Life in Food on the Cooking Channel.

Chef Tim has received local & national recognition for integrating lessons about food into school curriculum and for getting students to ask for locally grown, fresh foods; this effort led for him to receive the moniker, Local Food Dude, from a fellow Chef.   Follow him on twitter @LocalFoodDude.

Chef Tim volunteers countless hours to supporting programs tied to ending childhood hunger and increasing access to nutritious foods.  Chef has been co-chair of Share Our Strength’s Taste of the Nation New Haven for the last three years and has orchestrated tremendous growth in that event. Because of Chef Tim’s commitment to hunger advocacy and feeding children real food he was named Advocate of the Year by Share Our Strength in October of 2010 and a White House Champion of Change in April of 2011.
